From Graduate Training to Independent Practice

A postdoctoral year should be more than accumulating supervised hours toward licensure.

At Wellness Psychological Services, our postdoctoral residency is designed to help early-career psychologists develop the clinical confidence, professional judgment, and practical experience needed to transition from graduate training into independent practice.

Residents receive supervision and mentorship while building experience with a diverse outpatient caseload in an established private-practice setting. They also gain exposure to the realities of private practice—from developing areas of specialization and building a caseload to understanding insurance, referrals, professional relationships, and the business of psychological practice.

What You'll Gain During Your Postdoctoral Year

A diverse outpatient caseload. Build experience working with a range of presenting concerns while also beginning to develop the clinical niches and populations that most interest you.

Individualized supervision and mentorship. Receive ongoing supervision focused not only on clinical cases, but also on developing confidence, professional identity, clinical judgment, and greater independence as an early-career psychologist.

Real private-practice experience. Learn what private practice actually looks like from the inside—including caseload development, referrals, insurance, documentation, professional relationships, and the practical considerations involved in building a sustainable practice.

Increasing clinical autonomy. Postdoctoral training is a transition point. Our goal is to provide the support you need while helping you progressively develop the confidence and independence you'll need as a licensed psychologist.

Opportunities to develop your niche. We encourage residents to identify and deepen areas of clinical interest while building experience across a broader outpatient population.

An established practice behind you. Our administrative team manages scheduling, billing, insurance processes, and other practice logistics so you can focus on developing as a psychologist and providing excellent clinical care.

A Different Kind of Postdoctoral Experience

Many psychologists finish years of graduate training highly prepared to provide therapy but with relatively little exposure to the realities of building a career in private practice. Our residency is intentionally designed to help bridge that gap.

You'll gain experience practicing within an established psychology group while learning how successful private practice works behind the scenes. The goal isn't simply to complete another year of training—it's to leave your postdoctoral year prepared for the next stage of your career.

Who We're Looking For

Our residency may be a particularly good fit if you:

• Have completed an APA-accredited doctoral program and APA-accredited internship
• Want to build a career in outpatient private practice
• Value evidence-based care while developing your own authentic therapeutic style
• Are interested in developing one or more areas of specialization
• Appreciate both professional autonomy and access to consultation and support
• Are comfortable working with a diverse outpatient caseload
• Are willing to provide in-person services at our Tampa and St. Petersburg offices, with opportunities for some virtual work
• Are interested in establishing long-term professional roots in the Tampa Bay area
• Would ideally like the opportunity to remain with WPS following licensure

Supervision & Professional Development

Supervision is an integral part of the WPS postdoctoral experience. In addition to meeting Florida's requirements for supervised postdoctoral practice, we view supervision as an opportunity to help residents make the developmental transition from trainee to independent psychologist.

Supervision may include case conceptualization, clinical decision-making, ethics and professional issues, development of therapeutic style, challenging clinical situations, caseload development, professional identity, and navigating the transition into independent practice. Residents also have opportunities for consultation and connection with experienced clinicians across the practice.

Compensation & Employment

Postdoctoral residents are hired as employees and receive competitive compensation splits, with required supervision, training, and mentorship included as part of the residency.

Pathway Beyond Postdoc: Build Your Private Practice Career

Our goal is not simply to supervise residents for a year and send them on their way. We prioritize applicants who are interested in building long-term roots in the Tampa Bay community and who may want to continue with WPS as licensed psychologists after completing residency and obtaining licensure.

For residents who are a strong mutual fit and choose to continue with WPS, the transition to licensed practice offers a significant advantage: you don't have to start over. You've already established relationships with your clients, developed your clinical niche, become part of the WPS community, and built a caseload within the practice. Upon licensure, you can transition into our licensed psychologist compensation structure with greater professional flexibility and increased earning potential while continuing to build on the practice you've already established.

Instead of finishing postdoc and beginning again somewhere else, you have the opportunity to move directly into the next stage of your private-practice career.
