On July 1, 2023, Florida joined the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT).
The Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) is an interstate compact designed to facilitate the practice of both teletherapy and temporary in-person, face-to-face practice of psychology across state boundaries.
In our last blog, we discussed some of the benefits of teletherapy. PSYPACT broadens those even more. While Telehealth has provided a way for a patient to expand their search for a therapist state-wide, PSYPACT expands it even further, as it means that Florida therapists who participate in PSYPACT can treat anyone in the nation. This gives more patients better access to specialists in states with more options and is especially beneficial for those living in rural areas. Not being limited to the specialists in your state means you can receive the care that’s the very best for you.
Check out the map below for all the states that participate in Psypact. The list includes Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Washington, Maine, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, Arizona, and Nevada, among many others. All the dark blue states in the map below are included in the Psypact agreement.
Benefits of Using a Psypact-Approved Therapist
One of the biggest areas where this is helpful is in the matter of the opioid crisis plaguing America. While 115 die every day from a drug overdose, the American Board of Medical Specialties lists less than 2,000 addiction specialists nationwide. The hope is, that as more patients who don’t have specialists in their state can seek treatment elsewhere, we’ll begin to see a decrease in the number of deaths. This is also true for many other mental health concerns, such as disordered eating, PTSD (especially those needing EMDR treatment), and sleep disorders.
Another huge benefit to PSYPACT is that it provides more continuity of care for patients who move out of state, as it could provide the opportunity to keep your existing therapist even if you will no longer live in the state where they’re licensed. Most patients find it incredibly discouraging to have to start over with a new therapist, especially when coupled with a big life change like moving out of state. PSYPACT is helping eliminate that stress nationwide.
PSYPACT also opens the door for couples or family therapy to occur when the participating parties might be in different states. Or, if you travel frequently, work across state lines, or attend a college out of state, and don’t want to interrupt your sessions, then PSYPACT is helping make sure you can continue to receive the same level of care no matter what.
If you’ve been looking for a therapist in your state, and haven’t been able to find the right fit, our team of licensed therapists and Psychologists are ready to treat you virtually.
