We are really excited to welcome our first Post Doctoral Fellow, Dr. Patricia Calixte-Civil. She joins us with a wealth of unique experience and is currently being supervised by Dr. Lisa Beckman.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a therapist?
It’s a bit cliché, but the truth is I’m passionate about supporting others. I find it extremely gratifying to be able to draw upon my natural empathy and curiosity to help my neighbors.
What is your favorite thing about being a therapist?
I love people and even more than that, I love getting to meet new people and learn about them. It’s a treat that I’m able to do this as a career. I have been working on this for most of my life and it is so exciting to be fulfilling my dream!
What are your specialties and what drew you to them?
I specialize in helping people navigate long-term health conditions like cancer, fertility difficulties, and physical disabilities. I have been drawn to support clients with these stressors because the impact of physical health on mental well-being is often overlooked or minimized. I’m a helper and scientist at heart, and these specialties have allowed me to combine my passions.
What makes you unique as a therapist?
I have a warm presence and a natural curiosity that I bring to every session.
How would you describe your therapeutic approach?
I strive to work with my clients to build self-compassion while we identify connections between past experiences and currentpatterns of thinking and behavior.
What is your favorite quote?
“Often we pass beside happiness without seeing it, without looking at it, or even if we have seen or looked at it, without recognizing it.” – Alexandre Dumas
What is one thing that is important for anyone to know?
The goal is not “perfection” but to do the best you can with the skills you have.
What is your take on a current social issue?
Access to health care, including mental health care, is a human right.
