ANXIETY SPECIALIZATION

Each one of us experiences anxiety at some point in our lives. It can be beneficial to motivate us to go to work, complete assignments for school, and pay our bills on time. However, it becomes out of hand when it starts to impact our ability to complete daily tasks. The severity of symptoms can vary within each person from mild trouble sleeping to debilitating worry leading to inability to leave the house. Onset can feel quite random or it may be the result of an identifiable event such as a presentation, life change, or financial strain. We will work together through a cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, and exposure and response prevention approaches to assist you in teaching your brain how to identify and redirect negative, repetitive thinking and as a result, allow you to gain control over your anxiety and behaviors.

OLDER ADULT SPECIALIZATION

“Don’t get older” is a phrase that we often hear during our younger years. However, we cannot avoid this. If there is one certainty in life, it is that we will continue to age. The experience of aging can bring about great changes for some and hardships for others. Changes in our health, physical and mental abilities, living circumstances, and family can create a sense of dread and anxiety towards and during the process of aging and death. Therapy for changes associated with aging that lead to distress include use of cognitive-behavioral interventions to address negative thought patterns which impact how we feel and act. Further, supportive interventions are utilized and can lead to improved problem solving and changes to our view on this phase of life.

GRIEF/LOSS

There are few experiences we all collectively share in this life. One of the most influential and often devastating is loss. The grieving process can begin as soon as learning of an illness of a loved one or oneself and as late as several years following the passing of the loved one. Oftentimes the individual themselves, their family, or caregiver can experience feelings of anger and denial with eventual sadness that can be all consuming. Use of reminiscence and narrative therapy modalities can be effective in gaining a new perspective and assist in processing the impact of the loss. My job is to provide support in your journey moving forward while honoring the life of the loved one who has passed.

COPING WITH LIFE TRANSITIONS

Stress during life is to be expected. However, there are various times throughout life that we experience changes that throw us for a whirl. Oftentimes transitions from college to work, retirement, relocation, financial strain, health, or loss of a family member can create particular emotional anguish. It can leave us feeling lost and uncertain of the next steps to take to move forward. I seek to provide assistance in helping you gain confidence in walking this new path of life through problem-solving, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal therapeutic techniques. By increasing your awareness of how changes impact your functioning, you will be enabled to face future stressors with confidence to persevere.

HEALTHY BEHAVIORS SPECIALIZATION

Are you having a tough time sticking to your diet and exercise routine? Have you been having difficulty falling/staying asleep? If so, this might be an area of focus for you. Through therapy we will work together to explore what is getting in the way of you achieving your personal health goals. By making small, incremental changes through use of behavior modification, solution and problem-solving therapeutic techniques, you will find an improvement in your overall health and well-being.
