Hi, thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and the services I can provide. I view the therapeutic relationship as a collaborative, safe and enriching human connection. I offer individuals and couples a non-judgmental, optimistic and warm setting to address their concerns. My goal is to encourage positive changes in clients’ lives, help alleviate emotional distress and assist clients in creating and nourishing meaningful relationships within their lives.

My clinical practice focuses on working with adults across the lifespan from late adolescence to mid 90s, from diverse backgrounds (with intersecting minority identities) and in different settings, such as public hospitals, VA medical centers, outpatient community mental health, nursing homes and hospice. As a clinician, I utilize an integrative approach with psychotherapy grounded in interpersonal, psychodynamic and existential theories. I also draw heavily from cognitive behavioral techniques particularly when assisting individuals with health behavior changes.

I have experience treating many mood related symptoms and emotional complaints, such as adjustment concerns and role transitions, anxiety, major depression, relationship conflict, stress, and bereavement/grief. My clinical and research background in health psychology has also provided me with extensive experience assisting individuals grappling with the emotional aspects of managing acute and chronic health conditions, living with cancer and other conditions that necessitate making lifestyle changes to improve their overall health. In respect to health behavior changes, I have worked with clients struggling with newly diagnosed and uncontrolled diabetes, chronic pain management, insomnia, tobacco cessation and weight management. I also have experience helping older adults cope with the unique challenges of aging, including adjusting to functional changes and limitations, anxiety related to death and end of life, grief and loss.

In addition to my clinical work with individuals, I have specialized training and experience in couples therapy. I have worked with couples struggling with communication, disconnection, betrayal, incompatible sex drives, infertility, parenting dilemmas and trauma. I have also worked with individuals and couples in nontraditional intimate relationships (e.g., polyamory, open relationships) and LGBTQ and have experience attending to their specific needs and concerns.

I’ve described my areas of expertise in more detail below.

Depression, one of the most common mental health illnesses in the United States, can feel and “look” different for many individuals. It can not only affect your thoughts, motivation, and interests, but also affect your physical health and wellbeing. Major Depression, particularly if left untreated, can hinder your day-to-day life and contribute to a ripple effect of negative outcomes. I specialize in working with a broad range of depression and mood related disorders and tailor my treatment approach depending on the duration and severity of symptoms and factors influencing the distress. I am trained in and have extensive experience using evidence-based approaches for depression, including cognitive behavioral, interpersonal and psychodynamic psychotherapies.

The quality of our physical health is deeply interrelated to our emotional health. I use a variety of approaches to assist clients and their loved ones struggling with acute and chronic health conditions to enhance their quality of life. I have extensive experience treating the emotional aspects of coping with a debilitating medical diagnosis, living with cancer and adjusting to functional changes and losses. I assist clients in recognizing and coping with a wide range of feelings (often emotions that clients are not used to), processing difficult news and fears in addition to adjusting to what the “new normal” may bring. Depending on the particular health concern, I often collaborate with clients to make individualized treatment plans that offer practical coping strategies and set realistic goals while also encouraging clients’ autonomy to make changes.

The relationships we create with other people influence our mental and emotional well-being, for the better and unfortunately, at times, for the worse. Our early life experiences, disappointments, dissolution of relationships and other hardships can make having healthy and positive relationships difficult. Healthy relationships with romantic partners, friends and family members can help make for a more meaningful and fulfilling life. In therapy, I assist clients in exploring salient experiences and patterns and identifying needs and wants to better understand themselves in the context of relationships. I also help clients evaluate behaviors, emotions and thoughts that could be altered to create and/or improve the quality of important relationships. In couples therapy, I specialize in working with couples who wish to improve communication, rebuild emotional, physical, and sexual intimacy as well as strengthen emotional resilience. I have advanced training in Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I often integrate concepts and skills from both therapeutic approaches to inform my clinical work, but ultimately, I utilize the therapeutic approach that best reflects the couple’s preferences, needs and presenting concerns.
