Everyone experiences emotions, comfortable or uncomfortable, they are a very important aspect of our everyday life. They are linked to our thoughts, experiences, and even influence our decision-making process. Emotion regulation is our ability to effectively manage and respond to emotional experience. Being in control of our emotions is a vital for our development and will be influenced by factors such as personality and relationships. Unfortunately, there are experiences that affect our ability to regular our emotions; this can include trauma, traumatic brain injury, and chronic levels of invalidation. Depression is a term that we hear often. It can feel like carrying the burden of the world on your shoulders. Symptoms take many forms, and no two persons will experience them exactly alike. Sometimes it can start after having experienced a loss, divorced, retirement, break-up, transition to middle age, and other events, or it can hit you like a brick out of nowhere. Depression doesn’t discriminate who it affects and can be experienced by any race and gender.  It can also vary in intensity and its treatment will depend on diverse factors that will be addressed in session. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we will explore contributors to your depression and work on identifying skills that will allow you to continue making improvements in all areas of your life.

Are you currently experiencing excessive worry? Is it difficult for you to control your worrying? Do you constantly feel tired and overwhelmed? Although occasional anxiety is an expected part of life, for some people, it never goes away.  On occasions, anxiety can be disabling and not allow you to complete tasks, engage in relationships, or take care of daily activities. There is a misconception that if we avoid anxiety, it will go away. In session, we will work on developing skills to manage the discomfort. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, or Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction interventions, you can recover the control of your life.

It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation that has happened to you or a loved one. A traumatic event is not limited to having been exposed to combat or being an active-duty service member or a Veteran. It can be the sudden death of a loved one, sexual assault/abuse, intimate partner violence, car accident, or natural events. Nobody is exempt of experiencing a trauma or developing PTSD. A clinician that specializes in working with trauma can assist you in evaluating your symptoms and providing adequate treatment. Trauma survivors often experience challenges with their sense of safety, esteem, power/control, trust, and intimacy. Without treatment, symptoms can become a circular pattern that continues increasing. By using evidence-based treatments for PTSD including Prolonged Exposure Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy we can work on controlling your symptoms and improving overall quality of life.
